Case study:Achates Generates Income: Unicorn Theatre

Working with Achates has been hugely valuable. Their approach truly lives up to their mythological namesake – “loyal advisor” sums it up perfectly! Deborah has a wonderful way of consolidating and supporting everything you are already doing - which feels encouraging and empowering. At the same time, she shines a light on potential new paths to explore and helps you to question where exciting opportunities for growth might be found – the process is galvanising and inspiring.  We have been given so much food for thought, as well as extensive research and toolkits to take forward. The Unicorn has hugely ambitious plans for the future and this work really does feel like a great springboard and investment - thank you Achates.

Lucy Buxton, Development Director

The Unicorn Theatre is the UK’s leading theatre for young audiences, producing and presenting new shows alongside adaptations of classic texts, offering innovative and thrilling theatre experiences for children aged up to 13. With a deep commitment to the belief that young people of all ages, perspectives and abilities have the right to experience exciting, entertaining and inspiring work – the company aims to ensure that all children can experience theatre, and actively seeks out children who wouldn’t otherwise attend.

Following the recent appointment of Rachel Bagshaw as its new Artistic Director, the organisation was looking to harness this opportunity in order to develop and grow its major donor offer, through a revitalised and refocused major donor strategy. Achates worked with the Unicorn Theatre through a series of workshops to devise a strategy for income growth which is reflective of the integrity of the organisation’s approach and focused on enabling the Unicorn to further its purpose. This strategy was complemented by extensive research to build and diversify the prospect pipeline, and practical discussion and support around cultivation and making the ask.
