No. 2 – Celebrating Ten Years of Achates with Ten of Our Greatest Achievements
Cultural sector consultancy, #Achates, was founded in April 2014 with the aim of making high quality consultancy available to all. Every day we recruit cultural sector workers, fundraise and support commercial income generation, develop organisational and regional strategies, and support organisational change, but our purpose has always been to go beyond our paid work and to give back to our sector. And as we reach the end of our 10th anniversary year, we are celebrating ten of our key achievements and social value created.
2. Supporting International Campaigners
Achates has always advocated for and supported international campaigners across Africa and the Middle East. Caroline worked with and acted as a Trustee for, Nobel Peace Prize Laureate, Professor Wangari Maathai, for a number of years from her winning the Award until her death. Achates undertook a pro bono visit to Kenya to support Wangari’s charity, The Green Belt Movement, in deciding upon its future direction. We guided the organisation away from a challenging and expensive memorial project, instead recommending focusing on the delivery of its grassroots work with women and girls. We also developed a fundraising strategy pro bono for Wangari’s friend and fellow Nobel Peace Prize Laureate, Iranian lawyer, judge and activist, Dr Shirin Ebadi. On a visit to Lebanon, Caroline met with The Syria Campaign and Achates was asked to support the creation of a fundraising campaign to support the volunteer medical evacuation force, the White Helmets, in the run up to the announcement of the Nobel Peace Prize, which we successfully delivered across 2016.
Look out for our 3rd offering next week as we continue to celebrate ten years of Achates!
