No. 10 – Celebrating Ten Years of Achates with Ten of Our Greatest Achievements

Cultural sector consultancy, #Achates, was founded in April 2014 with the aim of making high quality consultancy available to all. Every day we recruit cultural sector workers, fundraise and support commercial income generation, develop organisational and regional strategies, and support organisational change, but our purpose has always been to go beyond our paid work and to give back to our sector. And as we reach the end of our 10th anniversary year, we are celebrating ten of our key achievements and social value created.

10. Creating the 8 Types of Impact of Culture and Heritage©

In 2020, as part of its support of the Achates Philanthropy Prize, Achates reviewed the 120 case studies created by the (now) Cultural Philanthropy Foundation which in this year was focused on establishing models of best practice of how cultural sector organisations were supporting their communities and how their communities were responding. Having been concerned about the negative impacts of the focus in narrative on the economic value of the sector, which was quickly exposed during the pandemic, Achates evaluated the projects and the impact each created, and from this developed The 8 Types of Value© as a simple way of expressing the breadth of impact of the cultural sector.

The 8 Types of Impact of Culture and Heritage© will be the focus of ‘Culture Makes…‘, a forthcoming UK wide campaign by the Cultural Philanthropy Foundation, announced this week and featured in The Observer and The Stage this weekend with a range of partners including 20 Stories High; Access All Areas; An Tobar and Mull Theatre; The Art House, Wakefield; Bristol Old Vic; Crafts Council; Dundee Contemporary Arts; Edinburgh International Festival; Litfest – Lancaster Festival of Literature; Lyric Theatre Belfast; Midlands Arts Centre; National Centre for Writing; National Museums Liverpool; Northern Ballet; Northern Ireland Opera; Oriel Mostyn Gallery; Picturehouse Cinemas; Roundhouse; the Royal Shakespeare Company; Scottish Ballet; Southbank Centre; Stage Beyond Theatre Company, Derry; Theatr Clwyd; and The Women’s Prize Trust.

The Cultural Philanthropy Foundation is inviting every cultural and heritage organisation in the UK to join the Culture Makes… campaign. To join, click here.
